One of the really cool things about Hawaii that i don't notice folks writing about frequently are its amazing snacks. People from all around the globe have made Hawaii their home and this ethnic diversity, coupled with Hawaii's remarkable natural environment for agriculture have created some extraordinary snack foods: below are a few of my personal favorites.

Chinese immigrants contributed a tasty treat originally called cha siu bao to Hawaii. Here they are known as manapua, which means "pork cake" in the local vernacular of Hawaiian pidgin. In Hawaii, they've been modified with many local twists. For example, instead of the typical char siu filling, in Hawaii, they may be loaded with local food items like kalua pig or curry chicken.

One of my favorite treats is chocolate coated macadamia nuts. Chocolate is made from the cacao tree which originated from South America, whilst Macadamia Nuts grow on Macadamia trees which are initially from Australia. Both kinds of trees are raised in Hawaii, but Hawaii is, needless to say, better known for Macadamia Nuts. When you place the two of these together you get a unique Hawaiian treat.

Shave ice is another exceptional treat that is ideal for a sun-drenched location like Hawaii. It contains finely shaved ice that's topped with fruit flavored syrups. The syrups are extremely colorful and come in all of the hues of the rainbow. Practically the only downside to them is that they can make your tongue orange, or purple, or whichever color you happen to be eating. However fortunately the effect is not permanent.

Pineapples are neither apples nor pine. The way they got their name was a complete secret to me for the longest time, until I learned that pine cones were previously called pine apples a few centuries ago. When Europeans observed the pineapple they gave it its moniker due to the fact it resembled a pine cone. Pineapples can be found in yellow and white types and, for me, they've the perfect blend of acid and sweet flavors which make a perfect treat on a sizzling day.

As you can observe, Hawaii offers a broad range of yummy treats. But there is a lot more to Hawaii than these types of scrumptious treats. In Hawaii, you can swim with the dolphins or even view a live volcano close up. Hawaii is also home to quite a few lovely flowers such as ginger and anthurium flowers. And contains many unique creatures like the Monk Seal and Nene Goose. I am hoping that you will get a chance to visit and view many of these incredible things for yourself.
